Trekking in Italy at Tonale pass – Strino lakes

Trekking in Italy at Tonale pass and Strino lakes

Challenging but simple and exciting excursion on the Tonale pass. Our trekking in Italy starts from the Hospice of San Bartolomeo, and after traveling along a slightly sloping path for about an hour, we arrive at Fort Mero. Here stand the ruins of a former Austro-Hungarian fortification built in the years before the First World War.  It was used to control the territory between the Tonale pass and the Presanella fort. The structure is a quadrangular block of armored concrete with steel beams. It was defended by only 7 Schwarzlose model machine guns. The function of this fort was limited to close defense and observation tasks.

Fort Mero

After leaving Forte Mero you walk towards the Strino lakes. After an initial part characterized by a path with a less demanding slope, once you leave the wooded area the path begins to climb with a decidedly steeper slope.

View

The view from the Strino lakes compensates for the effort of the climb. The panorama is splendid with a view of the entire Presena glacier and the Presanella.

Presanella view

From here we continue maintaining high altitude towards the Citta Morta, an Austro-Hungarian settlement dating back to the Great War.

Dead city

Now the route begins its descending phase towards Lake Valbiolo which during the summer hosts the Water Music Festival, a musical event that takes place on a temporary platform built on the lake itself. All in a panoramic context.

Valbiolo lake

After just under 5-6 hours the circular excursion ends from where we started, from the Hospice of San Bartolomeo. Tired but largely satisfied after our trekkink in Italy with sportravelit.com.
